Bathing in joy of Bath project

Best known (and named) for its Roman-built baths, the spa city dates back to c. 60 AD when it became ‘Aquae Sulis’ or ‘the waters of Sul’ in the valley of the River Avon.

Grand architecture has added to its Roman roots across the centuries boosting the historical significance of the city and growing it to become the largest in the county of Somerset.

It was awarded World Heritage site status in 1987 and has become a tourist hub for UK and international visitors currently boasting more than one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors each year.

You might glean from this that it’s been of interest to us for a while, so we were thrilled to win another contract there and will be working on the Abbey Hotel next year, creating 220 units as part of renovation works.

Abbey Hotel is formed of three Georgian townhouses on the west end of John Wood's North Parade - a wide promenade in Bath's older quarters which overlooks Parade Gardens and is a stone's throw from the spectacular Pulteney Bridge. Until 1890, the Georgian townhouses were used as lodging houses, before being transformed into The Fernley Temperance Hotel. During World War II, the hotel was requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as offices but was returned to its owners after the war and refurbished and reopened as the largest hotel in Bath.

Today, Abbey Hotel has been named as one of Bath's best loved boutique hotels and is home to ArtBar and Koffmann & Mr. White's, a brasserie-style eatery headed up by renowned chefs Pierre Koffmann and Marco Pierre White

The 62-bedroom hotel was bought by family-owned Khanna Enterprises (KE Hotels) in early 2018 and they are investing in developing the hotel further to provide first class facilities for visitors.

Work has already been completed to 24 bedrooms, the hotel’s reception, bar and lounge which were given a fresh new look in May 2019 with new lighting, artwork and colour schemes introduced.

Plans are now in place to renovate the remaining 38 bedrooms and transform back of office space into four extra bedrooms and Storm’s glazing will ensure the building is warmer and more thermally efficient, without changing the characterful features of the existing windows.
